An opportunity to gain valuable work experience at the California Coastal Commission while making a difference for our coast and ocean. We are seeking up to two detail-oriented, highly motivated individuals for volunteer internships with our Public Education Program, assisting with the Coastal Art & Poetry Contest for K- 12 students. The bulk of the work will take place between February 1, 2017 and April 29, 2017.

This is an unpaid, part-time position(s) with flexible hours, approximately 8 hours per week. Background: The Coastal Commission is a State agency charged with protecting coastal resources and managing coastal development in California. The Coastal Commission's Public Education Program works to increase public knowledge of coastal and marine resources and to engage the public in coastal protection and restoration activities. Visit our Public Education website at www.coastforyou.org to learn about all of our programs. The Public Education Program is staffed by a small team of professionals who work closely together. The Position: The Volunteer Environmental Intern(S) will assist with the annual California Coastal Art & Poetry Contest for K-12 students. Duties will include tasks such as opening and sorting the contest entries, scanning artwork and poetry, and data entry. The intern(s) may have the opportunity to contribute to an outreach plan for the contest, and take part in contest judging.

The bulk of the work begins after the entry deadline of January 31, 2017 and lasts for a maximum of three months, in downtown San Francisco, conveniently located near Embarcadero BART.

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Close attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Well organized
  • Experience with scanners or confidence to learn
  • Basic-level knowledge of Photoshop (for sizing and saving scanned work) or confidence to learn
  • Ability to work well independently
  • An interest in student artwork and poetry and a love of the California coast!

Description

The Coastal Commission was established by voter initiative in 1972 (Proposition 20) and made permanent by the Legislature in 1976. The mission of the Commission, as the lead agency responsible for carrying out California's coastal management program, is to plan for and regulate development in the coastal zone consistent with the policies of the California Coastal Act. The Commission is also one of two designated State coastal management agencies for the purpose of administering the federal Coastal Zone Management Act in California. The Bay Conservation and Development Commission has authority over federal activities and federally licensed or assisted activities within San Francisco Bay, many of which are not otherwise subject to state control; the Coastal Commission has the same authority over federal activities and federally licensed or assisted activities elsewhere in the California Coastal Zone. The policies of the Coastal Act deal with public access to the coast,coastal recreation, the marine environment, coastal land resources, and coastal development of various types, including energy facilities, ports, and other industrial development.
