Learning to Read

Adult Literacy Tutor

Assist adults to improve their basic reading skills so they can achieve their personal goals and develop their potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in basic reading, writing, and spelling.

  • Submit simple monthly reports on hours tutored, progress and challenges.

  • Maintain contact with Literacy Services Center regarding student needs, concerns, questions, etc.

Qualifications

  • Flexible, mature and patient.

  • Interest in and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Commitment

  • Minimum six months commitment.

  • Schedule determined by the availability of tutor and student

  • Typically two hours per week plus an hour of preparation, reporting and travel time.

Training and support

  • Orientation to the Library and Literacy Programs and Services.

  • Attendance at tutor training workshop.

  • Ongoing in-service tutoring.

  • Provided wide variety of training and teaching support materials.

  • One-on-One support from tutor trainer.
