Adult Literacy Tutor
Assist adults to improve their basic reading skills so they can achieve their personal goals and develop their potential.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in basic reading, writing, and spelling.
Submit simple monthly reports on hours tutored, progress and challenges.
Maintain contact with Literacy Services Center regarding student needs, concerns, questions, etc.
Qualifications
Flexible, mature and patient.
Interest in and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
Commitment
Minimum six months commitment.
Schedule determined by the availability of tutor and student
Typically two hours per week plus an hour of preparation, reporting and travel time.
Training and support
Orientation to the Library and Literacy Programs and Services.
Attendance at tutor training workshop.
Ongoing in-service tutoring.
Provided wide variety of training and teaching support materials.
One-on-One support from tutor trainer.

Description
Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities' information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
