Mission Statement

The mission of Susan G. Komen is to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.

Our guiding principles were born from a simple promise made between two sisters...

  • We believe in the power of the individual - recognizing the extreme value of one and the dynamic force of many.
  • We honor voluntarism and foster the spirit to serve by the lives that we touch.
  • We nurture an environment where people are valued and treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.
  • We are committed to being a positive agent of change - demonstrating compassion and integrity in all that we do.
  • We believe that the distinguished financial performance is a must, not an an end in itself, but as a means to accomplish our broaded mission.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure's promise is "to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures."

Description

Susan G. Komen Northwest NC was formerly known as the the North Carolina Triad Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We began as an all volunteer Race Committee planning the Triad's first Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure held on April 15, 2000, in downtown Winston-Salem. In June, 2000, the North Carolina Triad Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was officially formed with a 15-member governing Board of Directors. In November, 2000, the Komen NC Triad Affiliate awarded its first grants -- a total of $190,000.00.

In addition to the Race, our Affiliate oversees a variety of educational, outreach, and fundraising activities throughout the year. Our Affiliate was able to add its first staff in 2005; and today, we are staffed with 4 full-time employees and a host of dedicated and committed Volunteers serving as members of our Board of Directors and Committee Chairs. Our signature Affiliate event, now known as, the Susan G. Komen Northwest NC Race for the Cure, would not be possible without the hundreds of community volunteers that have dedicated their time, energy, and passion to the Race and its mission.

Today, our Affiliate, known as Susan G. Komen Northwest NC, proudly serves 11 local counties: Alamance, Davie, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Surry, Stokes, Wilkes, and Yadkin.

Susan G. Komen Northwest NC -- along with those who generously support us with their talent, time and resources -- is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in our community. Through events like the Susan G. Komen Northwest NC Race for the Cure, we have invested more than $4.7 million in local breast health and breast cancer awareness projects in our 11-county service area and contributed over $1.7 million to national research grants (as of 3/31/12). Of the funds generated by Susan G. Komen Northwest NC, 75% of net proceeds stay in our service area. The remaining income goes to the National Susan G. Komen Grants Program for energizing science to find the cures.
