Big Brothers Big Sisters

Did you know that there’s a Big Brothers Big Sisters program operating here in Central PA? Did you know that right here in Centre County we’ve got more than 50 boys and girls waiting to meet their Big? These kids range in age from 5-15, some live in town and some in the country, some love sports and others would rather play a board game, but what they all have in common is the need for a mentor in their lives. Youjust might be that person! Being a Big Brother or Big Sister take time... that’s it, just time... no special talent, no money, just the desire to make a child’s life a little better by being their friend. If you think you might be able to give that time - just an hour a week - to make a real difference in the life of a child - come to one of our orientation sessions and learn how. Call (814) 237-2224 or visit ccysb.com to sign up today!

Mission Statement

Provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches caring adults with children for one hour each week in school. They read together, play board games or just talk. Children benefit; adults feel like a kid again.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides opportunities for volunteers of all ages to be friends to children who need extra time and attention to succeed in school and with family and peers. Volunteers 55 and older are needed to be school-based mentors to children whose teachers have referred them for individualized one-on-one concentrated time. Typically, an hour each week talking about what is on the child's mind, reading the newspaper together or puzzling over a class assignment, has a positive impact on the child's attitude about school and academic achievement, while putting a little fun and extra meaning into the volunteer's day and week. Volunteers enroll through Big Brothers Big Sisters and following an interview, references and a background check, are oriented to their local school and introduced to a little brother or little sister by BBBS staff. Regular support is available to assure that the relationship builds over time, and any logistical problems are resolved. Teachers report that children with Bigs have an improved attitude about school, better relationships with peer and adults, and improved academic performance.
