Supportive Services Policy Intern Supportive Services Department Description: LIHI provides a variety of supportive services to help residents maintain their housing and develop self-sufficiency. Efforts include providing residents with case management, life skills training, technology access and training, financial literacy training and savings programs and other activities. LIHI owns 50 properties throughout Washington and has 14 case managers on staff to serve many of the properties.

Position Description: The position’s primary purpose is to support the Assistant Case Manager in developing policies and procedures for staff at the multiple housing sites. A more detailed task listing is included below.

Coordinate and compile materials from case managers regarding their current policies and procedures.

Create and edit materials to develop a department-wide policy and procedures manual for case management staff.

Create forms relevant to case management.

Assist case managers in the planning and facilitation of group community building activities for clients.

Qualifications: Ability to work sensitively with diverse populations. Completed or working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g., Education, Human Services, Social Work, Public Administration). Strong communication skills both verbal and written. Must be computer literate (working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Must pass a criminal background check (administered through LIHI). Good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to multitask and prioritize. Ability to ensure the confidentiality of clients. Enthusiasm for the mission of the Low Income Housing Institute.

Start Date: Position open until filled, requires at least 3 month commitment.

Hours: 8 - 16 hours/week in office. May require travel between housing properties.

Primary Location: Office setting within an apartment building; Frye Hotel: 223 Yesler Way; Seattle, WA 98104.

Compensation: This is an unpaid/volunteer internship. Mileage reimbursement between sites may be available pending supevisor approval.

The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.

Description

LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.

LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.

We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
