Direct Service Opportunity to Assist Low Income Seniors

ORGANIZATION: San Diego Food Bank

  • 34 people are interested

The Food Bank's Senior Food Program is federally known and funded by the USDA's Commodity Supplemental Food Program. The program provides food to 8,400 low income seniors in San Diego County and is directly distributed by Food Bank staff at over 35 distribution host centers throughout the county each month, every month!

With most events taking place outside in parking lots, rain or shine, lines can get extremely long. Larger sites serve anywhere from 400-900 clients a day! And for many seniors standing for long periods at a time is not only difficult but can put a strain to their health. Many seniors participants are vulnerable, weak and in fragile stages in their life, but receiving their food box each month is a necessity and must! With only 3 full time staff managing the long lines and processing clients one-by-one, the intake process can take anywhere from 3-5 minutes per client.

To ensure great customer service, client satisfaction and fast service, you can help by volunteering a few hours a day, by helping staff to speed up the intake process at distribution sites by processing clients through our computer based intake system. This opportunity is working directly with the people in communities where need is needed. Your help will help reduce the wait time for a senior to receive their food. Rather than waiting 1-2 hours per site, help us to reduce it to less than 30 minutes per site.

Sign up today and make a difference!

** Sites are throughout San Diego County and you must have reliable transportation. Site addresses will be shared upon request.

**Events are during the week Monday through Friday from 9-12pm or 1-3pm. Serious candidates who can commit to at least 6 months, and attend one site per month. More is welcomed! Must attend training and orientation.

Mission Statement

Established in 1977, Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank provides food to people in need and connects the people we serve to a range of health and human service providers. We advocate for the hungry and educate the public about hunger in our community.

Description

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in San Diego County. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 22 million pounds of food, and the Food Bank serves, on average, 400,000 people per month in San Diego County.

The Food Bank receives food from the USDA, food manufacturers, food retailers, the agricultural sector, food drives, and through financial contributions that enable us to purchase protein-rich foods, fresh produce, and dry staple foods such as beans, oatmeal, and rice. We also benefit from the generosity of more than 28,000 volunteers annually that help to sort and distribute donated and purchased food products.

The Food Bank works to acquire, store, organize, and distribute food through a network of 330 nonprofit partner organizations that include food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and low-income daycare centers in communities throughout San Diego County. The Food Bank also distributes food directly to those in need at 183 distribution sites throughout the county.

The Food Bank’s core values are leadership, integrity, cooperation, respect, excellence, and service. All Food Bank employees, executives, and officers are guided by, and seek to strive every day to live by this value system. Our values exemplify the dedication and respect we hold for our organization, our mission, our community, and the people we serve.
