About 13 years ago, members of Sister Communities of San Ramon, started Finca Esperanza Verde (FEV) as a unique experiment in ecotourism and local empowerment - part organic coffee farm - part tourist lodge. As new owners of the FEV, we are delighted to be able to continue their legacy in providing a unique experience for our visitors. The finca sits prominently on the edge of a quiet country road at 4000 ft (1200 mts) above sea level, providing spectacular views of the Dariense mountain range and the green valley of Matagalpa far below. The farm provides local Nicaraguans with profitable and sustainable ways to share their culture with visiting tourists and has received international recognition as a model of poverty alleviation through sustainable tourism and other socially responsible programs.

Potential areas for volunteer involvement include:

Escuela "La Chispa" - a small, one room classroom located on FEV's property. Anywhere from 45 to 65 students ranging in ages from 4 to 17 attend this school. One teacher divides his time between the students and welcomes anyone interested in coming to help at the school. Volunteers can create lesson plans, teach English, play games and sports, sing songs, and more!

FEV's trails - The natural cloud forest environment and spectacular views are second to none in Northern Nicaragua. There are 5 hiking trails, over 10 kilometers of trails in all, give the visitor full access to the entire property; including primary forest, transitional forest, organic coffee fields, look-out points, and community trails. • Trail Maintenance • Trail blazing Organic Garden • Garden Maintenance including transplanting crops • Building raised beds • Landscaping Maintenance These projects have some flexibility for volunteers to choose what most interests them and to focus energy there. It is a great opportunity to share a cultural experience with the indigenous people of Nicaragua while doing meaningful volunteer work!

About Volunteers For Peace

Location:

7 Kilburn Street, Suite 316, Burlington, VT 05401, US

Mission Statement

Volunteers For Peace (VFP) organizes, promotes and supports voluntary service opportunities in the USA and abroad as an effective means of intercultural education, service learning, and community development. VFP empowers host communities to work cooperatively for environmental sustainability, social justice, and peace. VFP provides opportunities for volunteers to develop leadership skills and global connections. We advocate for civic engagement and encourage volunteers to apply their new skills as citizen diplomats, community activists and global leaders.

Description

Volunteers For Peace is a non-profit organization, founded in 1982, that offers placement in over 3,000 voluntary service projects in more than 90 countries. Each year we provide almost 1,000 volunteers with invaluable opportunities to strengthen their ability to communicate in diverse groups, explore grassroots leadership opportunities, and build cultural understanding and connections around the world.

VFP offers short-term projects and individual service adventures for adults, teens, seniors, families and groups. All projects arise from grassroots, community based need. Volunteers should be prepared to work about 5 hours a day and self-select the type of work that interests them. Work ranges from environmental to teaching English, building schools to preserving historical sites, assisting with festivals to agriculture, and so much more. Project length can vary from 2-3 weeks up to 2-3 months.

VFP's placement fee is always $500 ($650 if you are under 18 years old) and must be paid at the time of registration. (If we can’t place you we refund the full fee!) Your registration covers placement, food, accommodation and work materials for your program. Volunteers arrange and pay for their own transportation to and from the project. Projects taking place in the developing world often require an additional fee in the range of $50-$500 payable to our partners upon arrival.
