Volunteer at Visitor Center

Without volunteer help the Visitor Center at Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge can't be open on Saturdays! We are also looking for hosts to help during the week. Greet refuge visitors and answer their questions about refuge wildlife and recreational activities. Also track visitation, operate videos upon request, and help with other special projects. Saturday volunteer must be willing to go through a background check.

Schedule is flexible, and we need more people on the roster to make schedules work.

Time Commitment: We start a new schedule quarterly throughout the year. Volunteers can either work one Saturday a quarter, one Saturday a month, or more. Weekend volunteers are now required to get a background check, and will need to commit to volunteering with the refuge for a year.

We are also currently seeking weekday volunteers (schedule is flexible). Weekday volunteers do not need to get a background check. As training can take up to 2 hours for this position, we ask our weekday hosts to commit to a longer term of volunteering as well.

How to Apply: Please email or simply use the link to apply.

Mission Statement

The mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System is to work with others, to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, founded by President Theodore Roosevelt on February 25, 1909, is one of the oldest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS).

Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the System preserves a network of lands and waters set aside for the conservation and management of the nation's fish, wildlife, and plant resources for the benefit of present and future generations.

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge needs your talents, enthusiasm, and time! If you appreciate and are concerned about the refuge and its wildlife, then consider becoming a refuge volunteer.
