Spend time working with elephants and their handlers in their day to day activities. You'll help the mahouts (elephant handlers) with their daily routines. This includes, but is not limited to, feeding the elephants, cleaning and bathing the elephants and cleaning the elephant enclosures.
The elephant project is situated northwest of the town of Kegalla, halfway between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence of Kandy in the hills of central Sri Lanka. The Elephant project is close by the Maha Oya river at Rambukkana.
WORKING DUTIES:
The majority of your volunteering work will be assisting the mahouts with their day-to-day aspects of caring for and maintaining the comfort of the elephants. This will include:
- Cleaning and bathing the elephants
- Walking them through the forest to forage
- Mucking out the elephant enclosures
- Helping to collect the food from the forest for the elephants
- Helping to feed them.
You will also learn about elephants and learn some of elephant commands the mahout’s use on a regular basis.
