Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Fundación Aliados

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Forest Conservation & Sustainable Agriculture interns collaborate with Aliados staff on activities related to combine smallholder farming with forest management to strengthen socio-ecological resilience. Work areas include developing model agroforestry plots with communities, introducing new crops into traditional farming systems as a way to diversify revenues, forest restoration using mixed species intercropped with short term cash crops, and reforestation on degraded areas to increase biodiversity and wildlife habitat.

Interns learn about the benefits of agroforestry systems and sustainable production practices to gain an understanding of the importance of these systems in the face of climate change. Participants also investigate the feasibility of producing new products in Amazonian agroforestry systems and how small holder farmers can obtain added value certifications such as Fair Trade and Organic.

Intern activities and responsibilities may include:

Ecological monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and data collection and analysis, community nursery and plant management, working in agroforestry plots with farmers, agroforestry research in partnership with IKIAM university, assist with workshops and trainings in communities, study the social and biodiversity benefits of agroforestry systems, and research case studies of native crop production and the potential for new markets for these products, support in implementing reforestation proposals and management plan activities for sustainable forest management.

Mission Statement

Fundación Aliados brings together people from different worlds who believe in development without destruction. We’re creating resilient community business based on biodiversity in the Andes and the Amazon-- and connecting them to markets across the globe. In addition to creating thriving businesses, this work improves the livelihoods of indigenous people, preserves traditional cultures, and protects valuable ecosystems that the world relies on. To achieve this goal, our work focuses on how local communities manage their natural resources, including agriculture, energy, timber and non-timber forest products (NTFP’s), and how these relationships connect to the outside world. Fundacion Aliados is a non-profit with a small, busy and dynamic team.

Description

Aliados is an Ecuadorian and US nonprofit organization with over a decade’s experience creating sustainable value chains in the Amazon rainforest. We work side by side with our indigenous partners to build community enterprise that balances the economic development of local communities with the conservation of their forests and biodiversity. We provide integrated support so that local communities have the tools, capacities, and resources to drive conservation of these precious ecosystems through effective forest stewardship.
