Hospice volunteers (18 years of age or older) needed for Needham/West Newton area for late in the day coverage , to provide companionship and emotional support to patients and families according to the patients plan of care. A minumum of two visits must be done each month. Visits range from 30 mins. to and hour. Hospice patients are individuals with terminal life-limiting illnesses with a life expectancey of 6 months or less. Volunteer support maybe in the form of conversation, music/pet therapy, hand-holding or simple presence at the bedside and also recreational activities. Volunteers have the opportunity to develop on-going relationships with patients and families throughout their illness, or may be involved in short term "vigil" relationships.
Compassion and empathy for individuals and families dealing with end of life issues are all that is truly required.
Volunteerss must meet the employer human resource requirements of a CORI background check, clear urine drug screen, and a "2" step TB screening ( as required by Mass health regulations)
Orientation and training is provided on hospice philosophy, end of life issues, the dying process, and working with various disciplines.

Description
As a member of the Hospice team, our volunteers offer companionship and supportive care to the patient and/or the family, this may be by reading, playing music, sitting quietly, hand holding, or any number of ways that the vounteer to assist the patient or family.
AseraCare Hospice has patients in nursing facilities and private homes in the Greater Boston area including North Shore and South Shore areas. Volunteers will be placed in area's accesible to their home or work.
