SOHO - Space of His Own is excited to announce that we are seeking mentors for the 2016-2017 school year.

Space of His Own helps transform the lives of fifth-grade boys by pairing them with local professional men for a yearlong structured mentoring program. Using carpentry and art as the catalyst, SOHO is designed to teach boys to value creativity, live healthy lives, communicate openly, and give back to others. More than a role model, and more than a friend, a SOHO mentor supports and guides youth to success.
SOHO meets once per week during the school year from the hours of 5:30pm-8:00pm. Boys and their mentors enjoy dinner together and participate in sports or teambuilding activities together. Following dinner, the group works on a creative arts or carpentry project, which can range from painting self-portraits to completing a photography exhibit to building their own lap desk. At the end of the year, mentors and families renovate the boys' rooms to create a personalized creative study space.
For the past three years, we have not met program capacity (12 mentor/mentee pairs) for the boy’s program because we have not been able to find the mentors. Last year alone, over 20 youth were waitlisted for the program. Help us put the "men" back in mentor and support Alexandria boys in need!
If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Lily Rowny at recruitment@spaceofhisown.org or call (703) 746-4501.

Mission Statement
SOHO-Space of His Own serves 5 th grade at-risk boys from the Alexandria and Arlington communities once a week with a life skills class, dinner and a creative arts/carpentry class. SOHO’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty and to provide low-income, underserved and at-risk youth the skills they need to flourish.
Description
Our program combines one-on-one mentoring with life-skills and arts/carpentry classes, culminating at the end of the year in a personalized room renovation. The life-skills classes include topics such as healthy eating, bullying, drug prevention, and career goals. The workshops at SOHO teach boys practical skills and allow them to explore their creativity. The lasting on-on-one relationships between a mentor and a mentee are proven to increase positive decision-making skills and self-esteem in youth, and through Space of His Own, we aim to help our boys develop the confidence to take charge of their lives.
This unique mentoring opportunity is a fantastic way to give back to the community, especially when volunteering with a friend. Invite your friends, family and acquaintances to learn more about SOHO.
Our orientations will begin in January 2015. For more information, please contact Haley Bader at haley@spaceofherown.org.
