Make 2021 the year you help an adult in need from the safety of your home! Volunteer as a virtual literacy tutor and change someone's life for the better!

Oakland Literacy Council in suburban Detroit is looking for compassionate volunteers to tutor adults for two hours a week. Volunteers meet students online on a one-on-one basis at a time convenient to both of them. Tutors and students meet online using a videoconferencing platform like Zoom or Skype.

Our adult learners are immigrants who want to learn the English language as well as U.S.-born adults who want to become stronger readers. Because of the help provided by our tutors, our learners achieve such goals as better employment and citizenship. They can read their bills, notes from their children's school, memos from their employers, and so much more.

No previous tutoring experience is required. Training and curriculum is provided. Upcoming training sessions will be held on (choose one)
  • Saturday, April 24, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. virtually
  • Saturday, June 5, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. virtually
Learn more about Oakland Literacy's mission, the adults we serve, and the role of virtual tutors at a 30-minute information session. Find out dates for upcoming information sessions by clicking on "I Want to Help" in this post today or going to www.oaklandliteracy.com/tutor-info-sessions.

In light of Covid-19, all tutoring is taking place virtually. When restrictions against face-to-face meetings are lifted, tutors and students have the option of meeting in a public location like a library.
