Fisheries observers are biologists who work alongside commercial fishermen to collect data on the fish catch, including seabirds, whales, dolphins and sea turtles. Love that tuna? Guess what else gets caught to bring that fish to your plate - seabirds, sharks, whales, dolphins, many other species. Fisheries observers witness human trafficking, drug trafficking and other illegal activites as tuna companies try to increase their profits. We are a 15 year old nonprofit trying to raise awareness about the link between the fish on our plate and the illegal activity out at sea.
We desperately need website development and management. Here's what we need right now (though there are many other opportunities that are ongoing):
1. We need to prioritize fixing bad links. I've got important documents' weblinks in published papers that need to be redirected to the documents' new location on our new website.
2. Guide us through the process of creating a new web site: switching webhosts, creating an associated list-serve, adding a search engine to the site, adding an associated blog.
3. Help us design the website pages so that it is easy for the public to navigate. We are an information rich website, so we need a way to categorize for easy navigation.
Our passion is ocean conservation, human rights, and workers rights! Please check out our current website: www.apo-observers.org
Thank you very much.

Mission Statement
The Association for Professional Observers (APO) is a non-profit organization with the mission to strengthen fisheries monitoring programs through advocacy and education. The APO strongly supports scientifically robust and transparent fisheries monitoring programs to support sustainable fisheries management and reduced bycatch in fisheries.
Description
The APO is an all-volunteer organization based in Eugene, Oregon that keeps abreast of the rapidly changing national and international trends in commercial fisheries monitoring. We support the independent scientists who monitor commercial fisheries at sea so that they can provide fisheries managers with unbiased data on fish catch and bycatch.
Observers collect information on catch composition, interactions of protected species (such as sea turtles, marine mammals, sea birds) with fishing gear and boats (i.e. deaths and injuries, entanglements), weather information, as well as a host of biological samples of commercial fish. They are the critical base-line data collectors for fisheries managers.
Observers regularly experience harassment and interference in the course of their duties and their jobs are difficult with little support. They work alongside the fishermen at sea for sometimes months at a time. They are the ears and eyes for the public regarding what is being caught, so our organization advocates on their behalf - that they may collect this critical unbiased data unhindered.
