For over 30 years, Minds Matter NYC has connected driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college create their future and change the world.

Each year, Minds Matter places bright and motivated students together with college graduates, who are committed to developing strong relationships with students and guiding them toward their academic pursuits. Minds Matter pairs writing instructors with small groups of students to work for one hour every Saturday. The program focuses on helping students prepare for college by improving their writing skills and providing them with guidance in applying to college.

WRITING & CRITICAL THINKING ADVISER OVERVIEW

  • Writing & Critical Thinking Advisers help students develop their writing voice, make an argument using supporting evidence and learn to be critical readers.
  • Advisers lead small groups each week in a structured curriculum. The curriculum focuses on the writing and revision process, constructive feedback, and coaching students on grammar usage and critical reading.
  • With your help, Minds Matter students develop stronger personal narratives for college applications and enter their first year ready to write.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • Experienced in helping others write, edit and revise
  • Graduate of a four-year college or university
  • Team-oriented, responsive, active listener who can serve as a role model for young people
  • Must uphold Minds Matter NYC’s values of community, commitment, and growth
  • Able to pass a background check
  • Able to commit to one academic year
  • Available on Saturdays
LOCATION
Sessions take place on high school campuses in Manhattan. Program locations are organized by program year
  • Sophomores: Harlem
  • Juniors: Upper West Side or Chinatown
  • Seniors: Chelsea
TIME COMMITMENT
Out-of-Session
  • 5hours of orientation and training
In Session
  • Each academic year contains 23 sessions from October to May. Sessions are on Saturdays and last one hour. There are no sessions over major holidays or school breaks.
  • Volunteers are required to attend 80% of the sessions.

Description

Since 1991, Minds Matter has helped thousands of underserved students reach their potential in high school, college, and beyond. Providing students with a Community of Opportunity(tm) is the heart of Minds Matter’s vision for change. More than 600 volunteers give their time to Minds Matter every week as mentors, writing advisors, program leaders, and more.

During their three years in the program, students participate in a holistic preparation program that focuses on their individual needs. Each student in Minds Matter is paired with two adult mentors who guide, challenge, and celebrate them through their three-year journey. Students also receive tutoring in writing and math skills, as well as SAT prep. Every student has the chance to explore their interests through summer programs at top universities and by taking advantage of professional experiences and internships through Minds Matter’s corporate partnerships.
