The Abused and Homeless Children's Refuge

The Safe Youth Project (SYP) is an after-school program for high-risk 4th through 6th graders. We have a Safe Youth Project (SYP) in Culmore, Annandale as well as one in Springfield, VA. Volunteers provide homework tutoring, participate in recreation activities, assist with workshops, help supervise on field trips, serve as POSITIVE ROLE MODELS and talk informally with the youth.

Opportunities are:

Culmore SYP: Monday- Thursday 3:30 to 6:00pm

Annandale SYP : Monday-Thursday 3:30 to 6:00pm

Springfiel SYP: Monday-Friday 3:30 to 6:00pm

*During summer break, the programs will be open starting at 1:00pm.

-We require that all volunteers attend an Open Door Information Session, which isheld at our Emergency Shelter for Teenagers on 2100 Gallows Road in Vienna. Our Sessions are held every second Tuesday of the month, at 10am, 3pm and 6pm for no longer than one hour. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about our programs, tour the Emergency Shelter for Teens, and ask any questions you may have regarding volunteering at the end of the Session. Please RSVP if you would like to attend, as space is limited.

-In order to build relationships with the children in our programs, we ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of 3-4 hours at least once a week, for 6 months to a year.

-We perform 2 background checks which cost $40. This is required in order to protect the safety of our children.
