We recognize that all children hope for a bright future. That’s why Home Start works tirelessly to help families identify and use their strengths to build a better future for themselves. We are committed to a community-based collaborative effort to reach children and families at risk and prevent child abuse and neglect. Founded in 1972 as a highly successful, national Head Start demonstration project, Home Start provides services to children living in poverty who require immediate, comprehensive solutions to ensure their safety and healthy development. In 1977, Home Start incorporated as a San Diego-based, private non-profit agency dedicated to child abuse prevention and family strengthening services.

Successful mentors are required to:
-Be supportive, caring role-models to assist in developing independent living skills
-Assist in discussing importance of health care for the mother and her baby
-Discuss the importance of achieving their personalized educational and employment goals
-Assist with child development and parenting through providing parenting advice and tips
-Discuss benefits of community services and how to access those benefits
Before becoming a mentor, we are asking that potential mentors first volunteer as child care providers at the Maternity Shelter sites. While working with the residents' children, there is an opportunity for a natural relationship to develop between the volunteer and one of the residents.
Interested individuals will go through screening and an application process prior to mentorship approval. Please contact April Eubanks, Volunteer Coordinator (aeubanks@home-start.org) for more information.
