Mission Statement

The Seneca-Babcock Community Association Inc. (SBCA) is committed to developing and enhancing the quality of life for the residents of the Seneca-Babcock Community and the community at large including at-risk youth, family needs, and senior citizen issues. Our goal is to advocate a strong sense of empowerment through education, economics, social and health related opportunities.

Description

The Seneca-Babcock Community Association was established in the Seneca-Babcock community by a small group of civic minded people with spirit and dedication to the neighborhood. Their devotion and commitment led to the opening of the Seneca Babcock Community Center in July of 1975. The center has become a safety-net for the community, providing daily human service programs for all age groups.

The Seneca Babcock Community Association was established as a not-for-profit corporation, whose purpose was to establish, maintain, and operate a community center to conduct and sponsor recreational, cultural, and educational events and activities. The center offers comprehensive human service programming to the residents of the Seneca Babcock community, as well as the surrounding communities. These services are aimed at all age groups of this historically low to middle income area.We do not require that you live in the Seneca-Babcock community or possess any previous memberships to join our organization. We serve all of Erie County. We do ask that you support our organization through regular participation in activities.

The clients involved with SBCA programs benefit from trained, caring, professional staff and volunteers who help individuals take control of their lives, envision productive futures and reach their goals.

The SBCA services the Seneca-Babcock and Hydraulics neighborhoods which are situated within the three (3) councilmatic districts in the City of Buffalo - South, Lovejoy, and Fillmore. The geographic location and the physical boundaries of this area are: Smith Street/Fillmore Avenue on the west, US-HWY 62 (Bailey Avenue) on the east, I-90 on the South, and William Street on the north. The areas are identified by census tracts #4, #17, #18, and #20, with the Seneca-Babcock community located in #18.

This once heavily industrialized district was home to many steel mills, automotive parts manufacturers, petroleum refineries, foundries, and machine shops. However, due to increasing deindustrialization and rising unemployment the area has experienced growing problems with poverty, population decline and urban blight, as is the region as a whole.
