Help Make Our Gardens Grow

ORGANIZATION: Homes First

Garden Beds

Homes First has provided 'kitchen gardens' at many of our homes. However, often tenants need help to know how to care for their gardens to make them productive. Our goal is to help our tenants have a healthy diet and reduce their costs for buying food.

  • Could you help our tenants learn the skills to be great kitchen gardeners?
  • Could you help our tenants with disabilities plant and tend their garden?

Tasks could include:
  • How to fertilize using natural components
  • Composting how-to's
  • How to put your garden to bed for the winter
  • How to acquire inexpensive plants and then care for them
  • And so much more!

About Homes First

Location:

5203 Lacey Blvd SE, Ste.A, Lacey, WA 98503, US

Mission Statement

Homes First creates and maintain safe, healthy, and affordable rental homes for those who need them most.

Description

Homes First, a stand-alone 501C(3) nonprofit, works to develop, own and manage affordable housing for lower income Thurston County residents unable to compete in today’s housing market. It seeks to encourage and use broad public and private participation and resources to reach its goal.

Formed in April 1990, Homes First grew out of a task force concerned about the homeless, whose members joined with other community residents concerned about the problem of affordable housing. Homes First is now working to increase the supply of affordable housing for community members in need.

Since 1990, Homes First has been acquiring, renovating, and preserving affordable rental housing for low income families, individuals, and people with special needs. Currently we own and manage 110 rental units. Income from rents goes to maintain the housing, provide staff oversight, and help fund future affordable housing projects.
