The Sankofa Center, a non-profit based in Sunnyvale, California is a unique arts-based HIV prevention organization that maintains education programs in Africa. As our primary fundraising effort for our HIV programs in Africa, we maintain a vibrant fair-trade globally inspired artisanal line sold in both retail and wholesale locations worldwide. Sold in top retailers such as "Anthropologie", "Viva Terra", and featured in "Vogue" press, our line is looking for those interested in learning more about the wholesale/retail world in a real world setting. We are accepting fashion/retail/merchandising interns at our Sunnyvale base to assist in the esthetics of product features for our online presence with rotating "lookbooks", product specials, and various promotions of the line . Some interns from our Sunnyvale location may be selected to assist in attending industry trade shows and/or other events in the promotion of the line at fashion trade shows in San Francisco and New York. Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Program Manager and with mandates from the Office Manager, you will learn various industry trends of the wholesale/retail industry with specific focus on the fair-trade, artisanal, and globally inspired focus. Photographing, styling and editing products for photo shoots, working with graphic design interns on esthetics for promotional layouts, meeting with staff and interns on projects, assisting with product stock and shipping will be daily duties. Interns selected for trade show "rep" presentations will also interact with designers and buyers and learn how to place orders. The intern will also be assisting the sales and operations manager with online boutique, merchandising products for the online store, and management of the warehouse. Requirements: Photography/editing skills (equipment/software) for merchandising of various products online, eye for detail and understanding of trends, must possess all equipment and software for duties, organizational skills and able to follow directions closely, computer literate and able to manage esthetics of the online store under specific direction. Mission Statement
At The Sankofa Center we empower people to wipe out HIV/AIDS in our lifetime. We do this through utilizing traditional African dance, music, and drama to educate people of all ages in Ghana. Through the arts we foster healthy behaviors to prevent, detect, and treat HIV/AIDS. We provide free counseling, rapid HIV testing, and connections to local community resources. Our efforts are supported through a line of products that are made fairly by our cooperative in Ghana. We are here to make a difference!
Description
Sankofa is an ancient African proverb symbolized by a bird looking backwards. It asks people to revisit their past in order to correct the mistakes that may affect their future. The Sankofa Center uses the dance and music of Africa’s past to foster a healthier future and a better understanding of HIV/AIDS.

The Sankofa Center’s programming is two-fold: touring dance-dramas are aimed at educating margainalized villagers with little access to resources and information; after-school programs target youth between the ages of 13-19+.
The Sankofa Center also conducts classroom educational seminars, provides free on-the spot rapid testing, and links women, men, and youth to treatment. We have reached over 47,000 villagers and 35,000 students since 2006.
