NAMI Gulf Coast needs your help! Volunteers are needed to assist with the NAMI GC Information and Referral Line during office hours: Monday - Friday any time between 9am - 3pm.
Helpline volunteers:
answer incoming calls and direct them to the appropriate individual or department
give out general information about NAMI GC and its services
provide local referrals to callers and follow-up on referrals provided to previous callers
This is not a crisis hotline. It is a 'helpline' where people can call to talk to a friendly person who will listen to them, offer some encouragement, and help them identify some options.
No experience necessary! Training is provided. All you need are general phone skills, a listening and empathetic ear and a helpful spirit! That's it!

Mission Statement
It is the mission of NAMI Gulf Coast to provide support, education, and service advocacy for families and individuals affected by mental illness. Eliminating the stigma of mental illness is our primary goal, and our hope is that one day mental illness will be treated with the same compassion and understanding as any other illness.
Description
In 1988, Carolyn Karbowski founded NAMI Gulf Coast. This was a result of a two-year journey after her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and she discovered there were few services, no educational programs and no support for families struggling with mental illness. Determined to make a much-needed change, Carolyn began to organize services that would benefit those affected by mental illness. NAMI Gulf Coast has evolved from a volunteer-run, grass roots organization to a vibrant education and support agency that is known throughout the state of Texas as one of its leading NAMI affiliates.
Today, we continue to offer our local communities with mental health education programs. The programs we currently offer are Ending the Silence, Partnerships (PTR), Family & Friends (F&F), and AS+K? About Suicide. You can learn more about each of these programs on our website. We also provide support for families and individuals affected by mental illness through our monthly support groups, newsletter, HelpLine, and community events. Lastly, we provide advocacy at the local, state, and national level to work for legislation and funding to ensure quality care for people living with mental illness.
