Mission Statement
Sunrise Center North Therapeutic Riding Program's mission is to enhance the cognitive, physical and/or social well-being for individuals with special needs, seniors, and disabled veterans through horse therapy and equine-related activities.
Description
In November 2006 Sunrise Center North Therapeutic Riding Program was established. Sunrise Center North was created to provide services for the greater Will County area. Currently, we also have riders from Kendall, Grundy and Dupage counties. We are located at the Ellis House Equestrian Center in Minooka, IL.
Therapeutic Horseback riding is a wonderful emotional, physical and social activity for the disabled population. Many of our riders with physical limitations have seen vast improvement in core strength, flexibility and balance from the movement of the horse. Often riders with mental disabilitities improve cognitive comprehension. Although the movement of the horse has proven beneficial to the rider’s body, the bond between the horse and rider enhances the spirit of our individuals that can not be put into tangible terms. Lastly, the enjoyments from the social aspect of the program should also be noted. Our riders have showcased their accomplishments during horse shows and demonstrations.
Special Olympics are one of the highlights for our riders. Each September, we take our qualified riders down to Decatur, IL and participated in the Equestrian Special Olympics Competition.
Sunrise Center North differs from other programs by providing individual lesson plans to meet the specific needs of each rider. Our sessions consist of private and semi-private lessons to maximize the benefits to our riders.
