About

NOW RECRUITING VOLUNTEER TAX PREPARERS, SCREENERS, GREETERS, AND TRANSLATORS FOR THE 2017 TAX SEASON

The Fremont Family Resource Center's (FRC) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax preparation and asset building services to taxpayers with low to moderate income, non-English speaking persons, and individuals with disabilities. The FRC VITA Program has been in operation since 2002 and is the largest VITA site in Alameda County.

We are looking for volunteers to serve as Tax Preparers, Greeters, Screeners, and Translators.

Volunteer Tax Preparer Responsibilities:

* Ensures that customers qualify for the VITA services

* Ensures that VITA participants have all the necessary documents to complete their tax returns

* Prepare tax returns for all qualifying taxpayers, using an on-line software program

* Answer basic tax questions and refer VITA participants to additional programs and services

Volunteer Tax Preparer Qualifications:

* Must attend mandatory training sessions, and achieve a passing score on the IRS VITA tax preparation

test to serve as a certified VITA Tax Preparer

* Excellent attention to detail

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

* Experience working with a diverse population

* Advance level computer skills is REQUIRED

* Tax preparation experience is preferred, but not required

Greeter Responsibilities:

* Welcomes VITA customers; manages flow of incoming customers

* Maintains customer sign-in sheet; determines language needs; provides packet of information and

in- take forms

* Assigns VITA customer to tax preparer based on certification level

* Schedules appointments for VITA customers with complex tax returns

Greeter Qualifications:

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills

* Must attend mandatory training sessions to become knowledgeable of process

* Experience working with a diverse population

Screeners Responsibilities:

* Meets with customers to ensure they have all the necessary tax documents, and identification

information needed for tax preparation

* Meets with customers to ensure eligibility for VITA services

* Verifies whether the customers tax documents requires an intermediate or advance level tax preparer

Screener Qualifications:

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills

* Experience working with a diverse population

* Must attend mandatory training sessions to become knowledgeable of process

* Excellent attention to detail

* May be asked to take the IRS VITA basic level tax preparation test and achieve a passing score

Volunteer Translators:

Bi-lingual translators work alongside the VITA participants, Tax Preparers, Screeners, and other VITA volunteers and staff members to interpret information. Bi-lingual translators needed in Spanish, Punjabi, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Farsi, Urdu, and American Sign Language.

Please note: Volunteers must agree to volunteer a minimum of 3-5 hours per week starting January 25 through April 18, 2017.
