United Way of Marion County, Florida is seeking volunteers to read to kindergarten students who have been identified as needing additional foundational literacy skill support. Volunteers will be on school campuses and virtual. The 19 Kindergarten classrooms are spread throughout Marion County. . This consists of reading to a child a pre-selected book, discussing the book with the student and reinforce particular focus points. At the back of each book there are questions to facilitate a conversation that focuses on comprehension and that are correlated to what is being taught in the classroom. The student will also read to you as the school year progresses. The volunteer commitment consists of one hour with two 30 minute one to one sessions during the school day, once or twice a week for 25 weeks during the school year. This time commitment is the same for both in person and virtual.
Training materials and background screening will be provided. Two hour educational workshops are held at United Way of Marion County and at Master the Possibilities in the On Top Of The World complex.
You choose the school based on your schedule and location. There are virtual and face to face trainings and opportunities. We will be providing face shields and gloves for in person sessions. The session times are set by the school. For examples of the books and a variety of segments of the program please go to www.uwmc.org- ReadingPals training videos.
