Pinckney Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Get outdoors and help remove shrubs that are too abundant in this wet prairie. This will make room for neat native prairie plants that should grow in this ecosystem. Meet at the South Lake boat launch parking lot on Joslin Lake Road. From North Territorial Road, take Joslin Lake Road north until you see the boating access site on your left. Waterproof boots are recommended for this site. Rubber boots are available to borrow, upon request; first come first served (please specify size). GPS coordinates: 42.40458, -84.05830

About Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Division, Stewardship Unit

Location:

4631 Bishop Lake Rd, DNR Stewardship Field Office, Howell, MI 48843, US

Mission Statement

To preserve, protect and restore the natural and cultural resources present within Michigan State Parks for this and future generations.

Description

Volunteers will help steward natural areas (woodlands, wetlands, prairies, etc.) within Michigan state parks and recreation areas. These efforts will help protect entire ecosystems as well as individual species - especially those in greatest need of conservation ("Species of Special Concern" and those whose populations are "Threatened" or "Endangered").

Currently, Core Volunteer Stewards are volunteering at monthly volunteer workdays on weekends at 7 southeast Michigan parks and recreation areas. Volunteers do a variety of activities throughout the year including: removing invasive non-native plants, collecting seed from native plants, and planting native seedlings. Volunteers can also participate in a number of Individual Projects like Insect Monitoring, Photographic Monitoring and Invasive Plant Mapping - to name a few.

No previous experience is need to participate, though some training might be necessary for certain projects.
