Whitehall House & Gardens

Whitehall is seeking volunteers for service on its governing Board of Regents. It is the responsibility of each Board member to help preserve, protect, maintain and operate Whitehall as outlined in its mission statement and subject to any requirements of the Historic Homes Foundation, Inc.

The Board of Regents is scheduled to meet at Whitehall on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m., and each member is required to attend a minimum of 9 meetings per year. In addition to the regularly scheduled meetings, a $200 board obligation must be paid at the beginning of each fiscal year (September 1) by each member of the Board of Regents.

Whitehall hosts a variety of special events throughout the year to raise the funds necessary to meet the needs of its annual opearting budget. It is the responsibility of the Board to promote and generate attendance at these events. Board support and participation, either as a donor or volunteer, is essential to the success of these events.

About Whitehall House & Gardens

Location:

3110 LEXINGTON RD, LOUISVILLE, KY 40206, US

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Whitehall House & Gardens to:

Preserve and present the mansion and its collection as a Victorian interpretation of a Classical Greek Revival style mansion, with special emphasis on the contributions made to Whitehall by the Middleton and Logan families;

to maintain, improve, develop and preserve the grounds as an estate garden and greenspace for public benefit and enjoyment;

and to promote horticulture beyond our borders through the supply of plant material and collaborative efforts with neighborhood and community groups.

Description

Hume Logan, Jr., the property's last private resident, had a vision for his beloved Whitehall. He knew that it must one day be open to the public so that future generations could learn about and enjoy the house and gardens he called home.

Since opening its doors to the public in 1994, Whitehall has welcomed visitors from near and far who tour the historic home and learn about 19th and early 20th century Louisville life. Originally built in the mid 1850s and extensively renovated in 1908, the Classical Greek Revival-style mansion features original gas fixtures and a collection of French and American antiques.

Whitehall's history has continued to grow with an ever-evolving horticulture collection of gardens and trees. The woodland garden is an official display garden of the national Hardy Fern Foundation, featuring a Victorian stumpery and a regionally unprecedented collection of woodland plants. A formal Florentine garden includes a stunning hydrangea collection; a specimen garden with winding pathways welcomes springtime with over 60 varieties of peonies; a small arboretum has just over 200 specimen trees.

The mansion is open for tours on Monday - Friday between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The grounds and gardens are open to the public all days of the week all 12 months of the year from sunup to sundown.
