826 Valencia's Mission Center Field Trips:

We are currently accepting applications for volunteers with weekday morning availability to participate in our excitingStorytelling and Bookmaking Field Trip program!

Field Trips | Monday-Thursday | 9:00 AM -12:30 PM | At 826 Valencia's Writer's Lab

On weekday mornings we open up our Writer’s Lab to students for a two-hour writing extravaganza where they are challenged to collectively write an original story in two hours. Volunteer roles include: typist, in-house editor, illustrator, and crucial support roles that help guide students as they learn the elements of storytelling.

Storytelling and Bookmaking is our most popular field trip, in which students create their own story with the help of volunteers. Students collaborate as a class to come up with the setting, characters, and plot and then break away from the group to individually write their endings.

Volunteers like you support the students throughout the process, guiding them as they work through their ideas. Each student --and volunteer-- leaves the field trip with a copy of the book.

Requirements for working with youth:

-Available between the hours of 9:30AM and 12:00PM, weekdays (Don't worry, you'll be able to choose which days!)

-18 years of age or older

-Vaccinated against COVID-19

-Willing to submit to a LiveScan background check

-Excited about supporting the development of young learners!

About 826 Valencia

826 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA 94110, US

Mission Statement

826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

826 Valencia comprises three writing centers-our flagship location in the Mission District, a center in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and a new center on the ground floor of an affordable housing building in Mission Bay -and three satellite classrooms at nearby public schools. All of our programs are offered free of charge to make them accessible to the students who would not otherwise be able to access our support.

Our goals are:

1) Transform students’ relationships to writing, building their confidence and pride.

2) Provide individualized attention and support, so students can make great leaps in learning.
3) Partner with under-resourced schools and communities, providing our free services to those who would not otherwise have access.

4) Cultivate wonder, inspiring imagination and creativity in all of our spaces and programs.
