Description

SafeTalk Internships and Volunteer Opportunties with Kids in Crisis ( www.kidsincrisis.org )

SafeTalk is an age-appropriate empowerment and prevention program that utilizes interactive discussion and role plays to teach children, grades K - 5, that they have the right to be "safe, strong and free." Using the internationally recognized curriculum of the Child Assault Prevention Program, volunteers and/or interns present the program FREE to schools in Fairfield County, CT. Workshops are presented one classroom at a time and are approximately 60 minutes long.

SafeTalk interns and/or volunteers undergo a complete two-day training that teaches all aspects of the program and prepares them to go into the classroom, give a a scripted presentation and meet with students one-on-one at the end of each session to reinforce concepts, answer questions, and occasionally assist with disclosures of abuse, neglect and other issues.

Schedule: SafeTalk is presented during the school year Mondays - Thursdays between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm.

Commitment: 3 Hours per week minimum (more preferred), on a set, regular schedule developed and approved by the the Safe Talk supervisor. This internship can be used for college credit (pending school approval). This opportunity is unpaid.

Location: SafeTalk is presented throughout lower Fairfield County, CT in schools, camps and after-school programs.

Our Ideal Candidate: Reliable, outgoing students or adults with a sincere interest in helping children who are comfortable presenting short role plays. Prior experience with children or in the human services field is a plus, though not a requirement.

Requirements and Training: An interview, two-day training and background checks are required. All volunteers and interns must have access to a car as many of the schools we serve are not near public transportation.

Suggested Majors: All majors will be considered, but most ideal for Human Development and Family Studies, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Education, Communication and General Studies majors.
