Do you love reading to kids, and want to foster a lifelong love of books and reading in the children of Oakland? Join our dedicated team of Books for Wider Horizons volunteers!
Books for Wider Horizons, a project of the Oakland Public Library, is a program that recruits, trains, and places volunteer story readers in preschools throughout the City of Oakland. The goal of the program is to extend the reach of the library, introducing children to the pleasure of stories, books, and reading.
To prepare story readers for their volunteer assignments, we offer a once-a-year training series each fall. Once the training is complete, the volunteer is placed in a carefully selected preschool center where he/she will present a 20-25 minute story time once a week, during school hours. Volunteers must attend all seven training sessions and agree to volunteer for six months as a story reader in one of our centers.

The Oakland Public Library is a part of the City of Oakland and has been in existence since 1878. Our locations currently include 16 branches, a Main Library, 6 Teen Zones, the Second Start Adult Literacy Program, a Tool Lending Library and the African American Museum and Library. We also operate the Books for Wider Horizons program that recruits, trains, and places volunteer story readers in preschool or childcare centers throughout the City of Oakland and offer many other special services for residents of Oakland and California.
We are supported by a lively Friends of the Library group and by the Library Advisory Commission, as well as by local Friends' groups around the city.
