Summer ESOL/ELL Tutor

South Bronx United is seeking caring, energetic volunteers an interest in tutoring or teaching English to speakers of other languages. Volunteer instructors will prepare and teach a 1-2 hour lesson, four days a week, Monday-Thursday for a group of 2-5 students ages 12-17. Volunteers will work with ELL students at various levels to improve their grammar, reading comprehension, and speaking skills. Volunteers will be assisting during the academic portion of the SBU Summer Soccer Scholars program which combines soccer and education to keep youth active and learning during the summer months.

Youth are all part of South Bronx United travel soccer teams and share an intense passion for the sport. However, NO soccer experience is necessary, but those who share the love of the sport are more than welcome to get on the field with the kids!

Schedule: Summer, July 14 - August 15

Hours: M-Th, 1-2 hour block between 9:30-12:30am (There is some flexibility).

Location: Urban Assembly School for Careers in Sports, Mott Haven High School Campus, 730 Concourse Village West, Bronx, NY 10451

Qualifications:

Available mornings Monday-Thursday (ideally, there is some flexibility). Some experience either tutoring or teaching English is preferred. Preference for those who have worked with youth and speak Spanish and/or French. Interest in soccer is great but definitely not required.

Training/Support :

Volunteers would be able to attend a two week training provided by experienced educators in preparation for working in the classroom if they so choose. Subject areas include curriculum and lesson plan development, cultural competency, and classroom management. Staff will provide feedback and guidance throughout the volunteer period.
