ORGANIZATION: Homeless Youth Connection

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 31 people are interested

Homeless Youth Connection (HYC) provides programs and services to over 200 homeless teens in 34 high schools in the West Valley including Avondale, Buckeye, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Peoria, Tolleson and Tonopah.

We are looking for volunteers to work in partnership with HYC case managers and West Valley high schools to increase awareness about homeless teens and the programs and services HYC provides to students who need assistance. Volunteers attend high school registrations, teacher orientations, "Meet the Teacher" events, site council meetings and other student events. The goal is to have a team of Ambassadors for each school that will become a recognized and trusted group to provide resources to school administrators, develop a student volunteer base that will support basic needs and events and provides students in need of assistance with resources and direction.

HYC is a grassroots organization that is trying to make an impact in the West Valley and we need volunteers to make a difference. We are looking for individuals that want to take ownership and responsibility for important projects and are willing to take the steps to make things happen.

Mission Statement

In partnership with the community, Homeless Youth Connection’s (HYC) mission is to raise awareness and meet the needs of homeless youth so they can stay in school and graduate. HYC's long term vision and ongoing goals are to provide homeless teens with housing, basic needs and services as they make positive, life-affirming choices toward becoming responsible, productive adults. In partnership with West Valley educators, government agencies, faith-based organizations, and compassionate community members and donors, HYC is helping to bring a positive future to this nearly forgotten population.

Description

Every generation comes with new hope and exciting challenges. Yet, today, homeless youth are faced with many challenges that they are not prepared to handle. Homeless Youth Connection (HYC) grew out of a concern for homeless teens in the West Valley and the many obstacles they face in finding a path to a successful future.

In 2009, Larry Cervarich was overwhelmed when he read about the struggle homeless teens in the West Valley face each day just to stay in high school. The fact that these kids had nowhere to go and no safety net to fall back on was unacceptable. Working with his Rotary and local churches, Larry established HYC. Beginning with a goal of providing for their basic needs, the organization has grown and now provides services and programs designed to help homeless teens achieve a successful, self-sufficient future.

HYC provides homeless youth with housing, food, clothing, hygiene items, and school supplies. HYC has created new and strengthened existing collaborations with local community agencies, organizations, and businesses to provide a wide-range of services, including tutoring, medical care, counseling, mentoring, life skills training, and job search assistance.

In 2014-2015, HYC will assist over 200 homeless teens attending one of the 25 high schools in the West Valley. Each student is motivated and committed to receiving a high school diploma. HYC's primary goal is to ensure these students receive basic needs and the support they need to stay in school and graduate.
