The Holy Cross Hospice Bereavement Center is a critical part of the hospital’s family support services, dedicated to helping individuals who have experienced the recent loss of a loved one. Bereavement Support Group Volunteer Facilitators have provided the foundation to The Holy Cross Bereavement Support Group Program since its inception more than 20 years ago. Facilitators create a safe space for individuals to come together, share their experiences, express and learn about their own grief responses, and empower connection between participants. The Bereavement Support Group Program consists of a free, nine-week long program open to all seeking support in their grief. The groups are held on Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at The Holy Cross Resource Center, 9805 Dameron Drive, Silver Spring, MD, 20902.

We are looking for facilitators who are:

  • Strong communicators
  • Sensitive/empathetic
  • Assertive
  • Flexible
  • Team players
  • Willing to learn, and understand that no one person’s grief is exactly the same as another person's grief

Having experienced the death of a loved one is not a requirement for becoming a facilitator.

Bereavement Support Group Facilitators are provided the following:

  • In-depth training on grief and loss issues, group process/dynamics, group leadership skills, and culturally specific grief responses
  • The opportunity to work as a trainee with a previously trained facilitator or Bereavement Coordinator
  • Weekly discussions with other facilitators before group sessions
  • Individual support as requested with the Bereavement Coordinator
  • Monthly training
  • The unexpected and indescribable gift that comes from supporting those through their mourning process and witnessing progression and healing
