ORGANIZATION: Make the Road New York

Description: The Volunteer Computer Teachers will work together to facilitate computer classes in Spanish for our ESOL Students to improve their comfort level with the technology and eventually integrate their new skills into their ESOL class.

Tasks: Volunteers will work in various capacities conducting the following tasks:

  • Facilitate computer classes to low level and low intermediate ESOL adult students;
  • Help plan, develop, or adapt lessons for the computer classes;
  • Maintain excellent communication and collaboration with MRNY ESOL staff and volunteer teammates;
  • Keep records of lesson plans and resources online;
  • Keep volunteer sign-in sheet up-to-date;
  • Work with other volunteers during class.

  • Gain knowledge of adult literacy philosophies, approaches, and techniques;

Requirements: GED or High school Diploma is required. Experience or knowledge of adult education is desired but not required. Volunteers with most success in this opportunity are:

  • Bilingual- Speak Spanish and English
  • Comfortable with Basic Computers
  • Great communicators and have Great interpersonal skills
  • Detail Oriented
  • Able to work in teams and autonomously
  • Reliable, Responsible, and Trustworthy
  • Flexible and adaptive to resources and needs of the students and/or team
  • Patient and with a good sense of humor
  • Highly motivated and willing to help

Commitment: Volunteers are asked to commit one full cycle.

Shifts: Inquire with our volunteer coordinator. Each shift is approximatedly 2-4 hours.

MRNY ' s 10,000+ members come from over 25 different countries and have a wide range of experiences and backgrounds.

MRNY has centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn ; Jackson Heights, Queens ; Port Richmond, Staten Island ; and Brentwood, Long Island , a nd our membership also draws from the surrounding neighborhoods of Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York, Ridgewood, Woodside, Elmhurst, Corona, Central Islip, and Patchogue. Our advocacy and litigation work affect millions of other low-income and immigrant New Yorkers on the citywide level and increasingly at the state level.
