ORGANIZATION: Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County

St. Vincent de Paul's Social Enterprises diverts thousands of pounds of consumer goods from landfills, provides transitional employment and skills training, and serves our community by providing low- or no-cost services and goods. The revenue from our Social Enterprises funnels into the free social programs that we offer at our direct service campus in West Oakland, one of the most distressed communities in Northern California.

Flexible schedule - volunteer shifts are available Monday through Saturday between 9am and 3pm. Free gated parking is available on-site.

Volunteers will be asked to search through our warehouse and incoming donations to look for antiques, collectible, and other high value items. Some of these treasures will get diverted to SVdP’s Redux Studio & Gallery (our retail, gallery, and artist studio space) for upcycling into artistic home decor art products, some will go to our other stores, and others will get listed on eBay and Craigslist. Dress in your grubbiest clothes, bring a pair of sturdy gloves, and get ready to dig up some gems!

Location:

Mission Statement

St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County is dedicated to serving the men, women and children of Alameda County.

Description

A non-profit, community-based organization, St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County (SVdP) offers emergency and social safety net services to its neighbors, relying on a vast network of volunteers to carry out our mission. We operate a free dining room, thrift stores, an e-waste recycling program, men and women's drop-in centers, workforce and culinary training programs and much more. St. Vincent de Paul serves everyone regardless of origin, creed, or affiliation. Our staff and volunteers are a diverse and talented group, representing a wide range of experiences and perspectives.

St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a 20-year-old student of the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. Similar groups began to form in Paris, then spread throughout France, and eventually throughout the world.

Volunteers, known as Vincentians, are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility, and sharing. St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County was founded in 1938, and has been serving the community of Oakland ever since.
