Along with getting to experience interacting with starfish, sea cucumbers, urchins and other cold-water creatures, you will be interacting with guests, answering questions, and ensuring the safety of the animals. This is a great environment to learn about ocean animals and use your communication skills with guests from all around the world! During a typical shift, you might show a guest how a sea urchin will grab hold of your finger, encourage them to touch a squishy sea cucumber or share how some types of sea anemones can live to be 150 years old!

No previous experience required, just bring an enthusiasm for learning & sharing about ocean animals! This is a year-round opportunity and requires volunteers to commit to 4 hours per month for the duration of their volunteering. This volunteer position does not include any feeding, cleaning or care of animals.

Mission Statement

Inspiring conservation of the vital building blocks of sea, sky, and land

Description

The Butterfly House & Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are the only public saltwater aquarium in the Dakotas and one of only a few butterfly houses nationwide that are open year-round.

A home to thousands of species, coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse environments on the planet. They also serve as fish nurseries, providing protection, food and shelter for young scaly swimmers. The Aquarium Gallery at the Butterfly House & Aquarium displays hundreds of different species of fishes and corals in over 10,000 gallons of aquariums. From coral reefs and anemones, to seahorses and tangs, our saltwater exhibits are home to marine life from the Indo-Pacific region to the Caribbean.

Step into the jungle, where lush vegetation surrounds you and it’s always a balmy 80 degrees. Over 800 butterflies from every corner of the globe welcome you to their 3,600 square foot home in the Dakota’s largest insectarium. Enjoy the serenity and awe-inspiring beauty that is the Butterfly House on your local tropical getaway.

A fun atmosphere designed for exploration and learning is what you’ll find at the Discovery Den, where parents and children examine nature’s wonders through interactive exhibits, activities and educational displays.
