Presidio Trust Volunteer Opportunity

Position Overview

The Presidio Trust is seeking enthusiastic volunteers who enjoy the outdoors and are excited to welcome the public to the park. Trail Ambassadors help visitors navigate the park’s world class network of trails and bikeways, suggest hikes, share park information, and provide general assistance guiding visitors to adventures in the Presidio while getting great exercise and spending time in their national park. Training will take place on Wednesday evenings and weekend days for six sessions starting in mid-October and we ask for a 1-year commitment.

  • Carry information about Presidio offerings, including maps of the park, and interpret them for park visitors
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Presidio’s trail network to include mileage, time, terrain, grade, fastest routes to key visitor destinations, scenic routes, and scenic overlooks
  • Become knowledgeable about everything Presidio including its history, projects, programs, dining, lodging, museums, art exhibits/installations, landmarks, the locations of restrooms and water, schedule and stop locations for the free PresidiGo shuttle system, relevant MUNI routes, and other visitor services and programs
  • Help guide lost visitors to their desired location
  • Provide suggestions for those interested in other hiking or cycling opportunities or other general interest things to do in the park
  • Log and report interactions and activities on the trail using a clicker-counter and notebook

Docents will be provided with a series of initial training sessions with opportunities for further learning throughout their volunteer position. Training will be provided by the Presidio Trust and various partners. The training program covers a range of subjects including Presidio history, general Presidio information, detailed information on the trail and bikeway network, touring techniques, guided walks, videos, background reading, field trips, shuttle tours, and other activities.
