John A. Logan College Literacy Program

The John A. Logan College Volunteer Literacy Program's mission is to provide quality literacy services that help adults become better readers and writers through the use of trained volunteers. As a volunteer, the time, place, and type of learner you will work with is flexible and according to your preferences. Learners are matched with tutors according to interests and preferences. Locations to Volunteer include all of JALC District we have classes in the following areas: Marion, Herrin, Carterville, Du Quoin, Murphysboro, and West Frankfort.

John A. Logan College Literacy Program- English as a Second Language (ESL)

Tutor non-English speaking adults in English as a Second Language for 2 to 4 hours a week. Students will gain experience working with learners who come from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Students will work with adult ESL learners on speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills from basic to intermediate levels covering vocabulary, grammar, citizenship, and U.S. culture. Tutoring materials are provided. All volunteers must attend a 1 hour orientation and complete 14 hours of training. Students must commit to volunteering for an entire semester and document each tutoring session.

John A. Logan College Literacy Program- Community Literacy Program

Tutor adults in basic reading, writing, or math for 2 to 3 hours a week. Students will gain experience working 1:1 or in a small group with adults who read below a 4 th grade level from various backgrounds. Tutoring materials are provided. All volunteers must attend a 1 hour orientation and complete 14 hours of training. Students must commit to volunteering for an entire semester and document each tutoring session.

John A. Logan College Literacy Program -Adult Basic Education Classes

Tutor adults in basic math or reading skills across content areas including English, Science, Social Studies, and Writing for 2 to 3 hours a week. Students will gain experience working 1:1 or in small groups with adults in pre-GED or alternative high school classes from various backgrounds who are overcoming obstacles to attend class. Tutoring materials are provided. All volunteers must attend a 1 hour orientation and complete 14 hours of training. Students must commit to volunteering for an entire semester and document each tutoring session.
