ORGANIZATION: Ready, Set, Read!

Reading Together

Applications are now being accepted to serve on an Advisory Board for Ready, Set, Read! Our organization helps prepare young children to become lifelong readers by training parents to read aloud to their children.

Through partnerships with preschools and kindergartens in underserved L.A. communities, Ready, Set, Read! makes home reading easier by providing workshops filled with easy-to-implement tips and hands-on training, distributing age-appropriate books to families, and donating lending libraries to classrooms. By involving parents in their children’s literacy development, we pave the way for future reading and educational success .

Since 2000: Ready, Set, Read! has: taught over 50,000 parents to read to their children; worked with teachers in over 225 schools; and donated 20,000 books to classroom lending libraries. You can learn more at http://www.readysetread.org. Or watch our promo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyrRX9bzQwE

Board members help us fulfill our mission by finding the resources we need in order to reach as many parents as possible with our important trainings. We are especially interested in individuals with experience in education, development, finance, nonprofit management or marketing experience. All board members contribute financially to the organization as well. Prior board experience is welcome but not necessary.

Expectations:

Board members commit to donate 4-6 hours of their time per month to guide our organization as it expands. Board members serve on at least one subcommittee. Board members are also expected to be advocates for our organization and to help ensure our sustainability through fundraising. Board members attend and invite guests to our annual fundraising event. The board meets in person quarterly in Los Angeles and by phone conference 2-4 times annually.

About Ready, Set, Read!

Location:

1000 N. Alameda St. #240, Los Angeles, CA 90012, US

Mission Statement

Ready, Set, Read! partners with preschools in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles to teach parents how to read aloud to their young children. In our one hour workshop, parents learn effective techniques to make book sharing fun and engaging. By involving parents in their children's literacy development, we pave the way for future reading and educational success. In our idea of a perfect world, all young children would have the pleasure ofspending time in their parent's lap, sharing a story.

Description

Ready, Set, Read! provides instructional bilingual workshops and classroom lending libraries to help underserved parents read to their kids. Focusing on pre-kindergarten children, our programs stress the importance of a parent's role in a child's literacy development, ongoing academic success, and overall self-confidence.

Since 2000, through the donations and hard work of generous donors, volunteers and motivated educators, we have taught over 23,500 parents to read with their children more often and effectively, given each of those parents a book to take home and read to their child, and distributed over 160 classroom lending libraries.
