The New England Aquarium: American Lobster Aquaculture Volunteer

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: New England Aquarium

  • 20 people are interested

HIGHEST NEED: Weekday Availability. Volunteers are required to be able to commit to a fixed schedule of the same, consistent day each week for no less than six months.

American lobsters are a cultural icon and one of the most important fisheries in New England. But did you know it takes a lobster 7 years to grow to 1 pound (the legal harvest size)?

At the New England Aquarium, we focus on researching the biology, behavior, and physiology of the long period when lobsters are very small. Larval and juvenile lobsters are produced using aquaculture technology, and then used in experiments which have recently addressed questions regarding growth, nutrition, development, and disease.
