Mission Statement

Chicago Lights changes lives one at a time by offering hope and opportunity to individuals and families who face the challenges of aging, poverty and access to education and healthcare.

Description

The Tutoring Program serves youth who primarily reside in the Cabrini-Green and Henry Horner housing developments. The public schools that these predominantly African-American youth attend have lower median attendance and graduation rates and higher median drop-out rates than most Chicago public high schools (68% average graduation rate versus nearly 100% of private city high schools).

The Tutoring Program employs long term one-on-one relationships to foster intellectual, ethical and personal skills that create healthy self-esteem and open doors to educational opportunities for Chicago's underserved youth. Our goal is to help bridge the gap our students experience in school and break the cycle of poverty.
