At Heartland Hospice, Volunteers work side-by-side with the account staff on a wide range of projects in a variety of different areas, including Final Wishes Fulfillment, Hospice Care, Veteran Centric Care, Veteran Benefits, and Non-Profits. The projects are selected to ensure that the Volunteer is able to experience and appreciate the different facets of public relations work. As part of a structured program, they will learn and undertake the basic responsibilities of a junior-level staffer, such as building media lists, media monitoring, performing research, writing media materials, and developing communication materials. They will also have the opportunity to work on special projects, event coordination and media pitches. Volunteers are encouraged to follow through on as many stages of a project as is feasible so that they can feel a sense of ownership and achievement over their work. In keeping with the Heartland Hospice philosophy of enabling people to develop to their full potential, Volunteers who show ability and aptitude are also encouraged, under guided supervision, to take on challenges that stretch and stimulate them.

Public relations / Community Events Volunteering will help you expand your knowledge and skills in developing public relation campaigns through general media, branding, special events, the creation of media kits, and public service announcements or press releases.

You’ll be able to help a company support the goodwill and brand of a product, service or person. You’ll learn about writing press releases and how to leverage media contacts to create a distribution of information to ensure your target audience is reached effectively.

Some of your Duties may include:

  • Provide information on events and contacts to the Development database manager.
  • Assist the Volunteer Coordinator and Business Development Manager with acknowledgments and recognition for Community Event partners and sponsors.
  • Assist the Volunteer Coordinator and Business Development Manager by meeting, training and working with event volunteers.
  • Assist the Volunteer Coordinator and Business Development Manager by working closely with the marketing team to coordinate logistical needs.
  • Attend events and assist the Volunteer Coordinator and Business Development Manager as needed.
  • Assist with creation of an annual calendar of Community Event Volunteer needs, including an outline of all volunteer roles and timeline for recruitment.
