Do you like engaging with new people, while discovering mutual interests, similarities, and differences? San José Public Library is looking for friendly people who are interested in actively encouraging and assisting conversation among new English language learners.
How You Will Make a Difference
Conversation Club Facilitators play a pivotal role in helping English language learners gain language skills and confidence in a welcoming and respectful environment.
Volunteers are needed to:
- Facilitate interactive sessions open to English language learners in collaboration with library staff and/or other ELL volunteers
- Help adults gain English literacy skills, pronunciation, and idioms, while sharing anecdotes about U.S. culture, customs, and history
- Plan and deliver English lessons either as a class series or independent programs
- Have basic skills for conducting meetings with SJPL staff support

Commitment/Schedule
Willingness to volunteer at least once a week for a 6 month duration. Schedule is dependent on the availability of the volunteer for Sunday afternoons.
Prospective volunteers should:
- Be comfortable working with groups of English learners in a group setting
- Be dependable, punctual, and responsible
- Complete a fingerprint background check, at no cost to you. Only required if you are 18 years or older

Description
Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities' information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
