Be a Foster Caregiver!
You can care for a pregnant cat mom, young kittens, adults with special needs or even compassionate hospice care for an older cat.

Our foster care program provides temporary safe and loving homes to kittens and cats until they can return to our center and be adopted by their new family. This program offers a second chance to many animals who would not thrive in a shelter environment. Animals enter the foster program because they are not ready for adoption, either because of behavioral reasons or because they are too young, sick, or injured. Animals that have been in the shelter for extended stays can also benefit from time in a stable and nurturing home environment. Fostering can last for as little as a few days, or as long as 4-8 weeks, depending on the case. Almost anyone can become a successful foster caregiver with a little education, flexibility and commitment. There are, however, some important points to consider. Foster animals must be kept separate from all resident animals You must commit to spending the amount of time with your foster animals that your cat/kitten needs- very young kittens require 24-hour care/7 days a week for about 6 weeks You must be able to bring the animals to ASAP's shelter for check-ups and urgent care You must agree to bring the foster animals back to ASAP at the end of the foster period You cannot give vaccines to foster animals Foster Program Requirements You must be 18 years of age or a family with parents committed to leading the care You need to live in the Santa Barbara County area You must complete a Foster Parent Application Upon approval, you must complete and sign a Foster Care Agreement You must provide required weight, medication and/or behavioral records for foster animal(s) while in your care You must maintain consistent feeding schedules and daily care You must uphold a disease-free, safe and nurturing environment You must provide daily play time and a loving foundation for cats and kittens in your care You must allow inspection of home and location where foster cats/kittens will live

Mission Statement

The mission of the Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) is to eliminate the killing of adoptable cats impounded at the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter by providing daily care, medical rehabilitation and adoptive homes.

  • improve the public perception of the Animal Shelter and increase adoption activity,
  • reduce the population of stray and homeless cats through spay/neuter, redemption, foster care, and other educational programs,
  • promote the benefits of companion animals,
  • counsel and educate the public in providing a healthy and safe environment for cats, and
  • form working relationships with other Santa Barbara County animal welfare groups.

Description

Volunteering with ASAP

Through the generosity and compassion of our volunteers and donors, the Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) provides homeless and abandoned cats and kittens with loving attention, veterinary care, and a place to live while awaiting a forever home. ASAP shelter volunteers participate in routine cat care and upkeep of the facility, which includes feeding, cleaning cat cages, laundry and housekeeping details at the shelter 7 days a week, 365 days a year. ASAP welcomes new volunteers who can devote 3-4 hours a week to the care of the deserving shelter felines while they wait for a forever home. Additionally, many volunteers foster cats and kittens in their homes. Have a special skill or talent? Many volunteers work behind-the-scenes doing clerical work, event planning, fundraising, social media, and more.
