Veterans and active duty millitary members are needed to serve as volunteers with our hospice patients who are veterans. Compassus Hospice is a partner in the We Honor Veterans program of the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). This program serves to educate staff, volunteers and the community about the special issues of veterans at end of life.
Veterans and active duty volunteers have a unique perspective gained from their military experience, and as such, they are able to provide understanding and comradery to our veteran patients. Military volunteers can also be utilized on an "as needed" basis to assist with a variety of veteran specific activities.
Veteran specific activities include (but not limited to)
- Presenting a certificate and pin to the veteran
- Assisting veteran with replacing lost medals
- Assisting veteran in reminiscing / telling life stories
- Participating in community education activities regarding veteran issues
- Providing companionship to a veteran patient
Active duty members and veterans can bring the missing piece of forgotten comradery back into the patient's life.

Description
Volunteers are the heart of hospice! We need your caring hearts and helping hands to help with our terminally ill patients and their families. The hours are flexible and you will be assigned to a patient who lives near your home or place of work. There are many ways you can make a difference as a Compassus Hospice Volunteer.
Volunteers visit with patients who have life limiting illnesses. Visiting may consist of providing meaningful conversation, playing cards, reading to a patient, looking through photo albums, etc. Volunteers may also help with errands or provide support for the caregivers. Most of our patients reside in nursing homes, group homes, assisted livings or their private residence.
We also utilize administrative volunteers. There are a lot of tasks in the office we can use help with.
As a volunteer, you are part of a professional care team which includes doctors, nurses, aides, chaplains and social workers. The time commitment made by volunteers is flexible and training is provided.
Skills: Compassionate and able to keep commitments.
