The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
Drop-in Center Volunteers are responsible for ensuring a safe and respectful atmosphere in our drop-in center for LGBTQ participants ages 11 to 22. Other responsibilities include listening to youth; engaging youth via activities, conversations, or games; setting limits; and being a positive role model. These volunteers make a commitment to staff the drop-in center for one three-hour shift per week (4-7, 5:30-8:30, or 7-9:30 M-F) for a minimum of one year. We have at least two volunteers on a shift, with up to 9 adults in the house in other roles, to keep the house open for youth. Shift volunteers must attend a three-day training before volunteering; the next training will be held over three weekend days in February 2017, exact dates TBD.
