November 1, 2017
February 6, 2018

Promise
Scholars is a universal college access program. We want our students to reach their dreams of obtaining a post-secondary education! After completing their applications for financial aid, students receive a financial aid award letter from every college they are accepted to and we want to help them figure out what this all means.

We need volunteers currently in or that have completed a post-secondary education to partner up with groups of high school seniors and help them with the process of reading their financial aid letter.

As a volunteer you will be expected to:

  • Attend a 1 hour training session
  • Understand the financial aid process
  • Read a financial aid award letter
  • Communicate with high school seniors and/or their families
  • Guide a student towards their educational decisions
  • Support all our students with their goals

You will be provided:

  • Training on financial aid and award letter
  • Light snacks and beverages

With a few hours of your afternoon, you can help our high school seniors figure out their pathway to college.

Thank you for your interest in serving with PromiseScholars!

Mission Statement

Promise Scholars believes that unlocking the potential of our community relies on unlocking the potential of all our children. So we bring everyone together--students, parents, educators, businesses, and local leaders--to introduce kids to the opportunities available after high school and make sure they get on the education pathway to achieve their goals. When we help them become successful and contributing adults, our entire region benefits from a brighter, more productive future. The vision of the Promise Scholars Initiative is to prepare all Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD) students who go on to Chaffey, Montclair, and Ontario High Schools to reach their college and career dreams.

Description

Our early and all approach-we connect with all our kids starting in Kindergarten and continue that relationship even after high school-requires a lot of resources and partners. Every kid has the potential to succeed, and helping kids reach their goals is key in strengthening our community and a wide circle of caring and engaged adults helps make this possible.

We work to increase student knowledge about college and career technical training opportunities and help them develop and act on their plans for a post-secondary education.

This is achieved through in-class curriculum on college and careers starting in Kindergarten. Promise Scholars also takes all 5 th and 8 th graders on field trips to community colleges and four year universities so they can begin to envision themselves as college students. All 6 th graders participate in business leader presentations in class, where community members come speak about their path to a degree or certificate and their career. In 9 th grade we help student explore their personality strengths and career options. And 12 th graders get help with their college application and financial aid applications.

We serve low income neighborhoods in Ontario and Montclair where the majority of students will be the first in their family to complete college.
