Veteran-to-Veteran Companion Volunteers - As part of our We Honor Vets Program, AseraCare Hospice seeks caring, compassionate individuals who would be willing to spend an hour a week visiting our terminally ill patients and their families many of them Military Veterans. Volunteers spend sacred time together with patients and families simply by accompanying them during their final journey. Companions offer patients healing by practicing a calming presence, deep compassion, and generous listening. Volunteers play an important role in providing social support and decreasing isolation that can so often occur for the terminally ill. Veterans have the ability to relate to other Veterans due to similar military experiences. That can be comforting to our military veteran patients and their families

Volunteers are provided free training, a training certificate, and can work flexible hours that suit their individual schedules. Volunteer training blends ancient wisdom with contemporary practices.

Skills

  • Interpersonal Skills: Volunteers need to be able to fit into any mode: engage in conversations from the superficial to the spiritually profound, depending on the day. Also need to be comfortable with silence.

Requirements

Be able to provide own transportation. Complete approximately 6-8 hours of on-line training, and afterwards attend 8-hours orientation. Complete free complete background check, urine screen, and tuberculosis tests. We request a nine month commitment, at the least, to our volunteer program. Volunteer Training is offered on a quarterly basis at the Bloomington office.

*Out of respect for the grieving process, if you are a surviving family member, we encourage you to wait a minimum of 13 months following the patient's death to serve as a direct care volunteer or in public relations activities.

Mission Statement

AseraCare's mission is to share our passion for improving quality of life through innovative healthcare, one person, one family and one community at a time.

Description

Hospice is about living. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death, but rather it affirms life, emphasizes dignity, and enhances the quality of the remainder of a person's life. Hospice adds life to days at a time when days can no longer be added to life.

Hospice treats the person, not the disease . . . focuses on family and friends, not just the individual . . . and emphasizes the quality of life, not the duration.

Hospice is a program of palliative and supportive services that provide physical, psychological, social and spiritual care for terminally ill persons and their families. It is a comprehensive, medically directed, team-oriented program that accentuates pain control and symptom management for patients who no longer respond to routine aggressive medical care. The focus of hospice care is palliative rather than curative in nature.
