@VADFoundation

The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation was established in 2006 by Valentino Achak Deng and Dave Eggers, after the publication of Eggers's best-selling novel What Is the What, which tells Deng's life story. The Foundation's mission is to help rebuild Sudanese communities in war-torn Southern Sudan by increasing access to educational opportunities and creating viable and community-driven educational centers. In May 2009, the Foundation opened its first secondary school in the village of Marial Bai, Southern Sudan, the campus has been expanded to include a library, teacher-training college, and community center.

We're a very small and friendly non-profit organization. We are setting up an information table at the Sunset Farmers Market and looking for passionate outgoing people to hand out pamphlets and accept donations for the VAD Foundation.

We are in need of event planners in the following cities:

Los Angeles

San Francisco and the Bay Area

Washington, D.C.

New York City

Five States (Kansas City, Minneapolis, etc.)

Mission Statement

The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation is a nonprofit organization working to increase access to education in post-conflict South Sudan by building schools, libraries, teacher-training institutes, and community centers.

Description

The Marial Bai Secondary School opened in May 2009. It is the first fully-functional high school in the entire region, where there are no other opportunities for students--and especially girls--to continue their education past the elementary level. In spring 2010, we constructed a girls' dormitory, to provide a safe learning environment and an alternative to early marriage for hundreds of young women in the region.
