Give new life to rescue dogs and disabled veterans

Thank you for looking at this wonderful opportunity! If you seek to help the growing number of disabled veterans and first responders with PTSD whose lives are transformed by service dogs, please join Next Step Service Dogs, a 501(c) nonprofit, as a fundraising project leader or a Board member.

We depend on public support and the driving talent of people like you to recruit your own team of volunteers and to fundraise through local fundraisers, sponsorships, online campaigns, and/or media coverage. The only fee to the veteran is a $150 application fee, no other fees for acquiring and training amazing dogs with courageous veterans. Next Step Service Dogs is based in San Diego County, with additional trainers in Orange County California and in Boise Idaho.

Unlike many service dog organizations, we spend at least 4 months of dog-client training sessions, 3 times a week, working to ensure that the client and dog are fully responsive to each other, to dramatically reduce PTSD symptoms and triggers. We also seek to hire veterans, to give them a sense of purpose and the ability to give back in a meaningful way.

With over 45 certified dog-client teams in place, we have compelling stories about our clients and dogs - some report that we have saved their lives, one said now he can now play with his 3-year daughter for the first time, and all say that their severe anxiety is greatly lessened. These clients benefit in huge ways -- men and women who could not enter a store, travel on planes, go to college, get a job, attend family events, or even smile, now can. We are the last stop for many clients who noone else could help.

Please contact us via volunteermatch or by email to judy@nextstepservicedogs.org if you are interested in further discussion!

About Next Step Service Dogs

Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower positive change for veterans with invisible disabilities such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) through the use of expertly-trained service dogs.

Description

Our service dogs greatly improve the veterans’ quality of life, independence, and the sense of being unconditionally loved, respected and protected by a service dog battle buddy. Our service dogs include many rescue dogs that are trained to perform specific tasks and work as described by the American Disabilities Act (ADA).

Standard service dog tasks include getting help, turning on lights, balance support, and retrieval, to name a few. Even more important, the psychiatric service dog tasks include helping a veteran gauge the safety of their surroundings, allowing them to venture into public places without constantly scanning for snipers, hidden bombs and other dangers; reassuring them, allowing them to learn trust and caring again - and maybe smile for the first time in months.

We have plans to create Next Step Training Chapters throughout the country. And we will be hiring veterans as trainers, further enhancing the bonds and effectiveness of our trainer-dog-veteran teams.
