Volunteers Needed!

"Acting and Improvisation" (Drama for the Disabled) City College of San Francisco Dept. of Disabled Students; Thursdays, 4-5pm and 6-8pm (there is a break between 5-6pm). Volunteer for one or both sections of the classes.

Location: Pomeroy Center, 207 Skyline Blvd, SF, Instructor: Judy Goodman Contact: 415/515-1858 or jgoodman@ccsf.edu or judynaomi@gmail.com

Class Structure: Classes are 1-3 hours, beginning with a group physical warm up. This is followed by theater games related to the theme of the class. Classes will include a lot of partner and small group work with a focus on improvisation, short scenes and possible short scripted work. The students in the class have a range of disabilities from mobility, developmental, hearing, vision impairments and some psychiatric disabilities. Additionally, there are staff and volunteers who attend and support the students. Ages of students range from 17 to people in there 60's. At times there are ASL interpreters to support deaf students in the class.

Volunteer Description: Volunteers need not be actors or have experience acting, just a desire to participate and have fun. At the end of the semester there will be an informal presentation for family and friends. Volunteer duties could include: participating in warm ups and modeling, pairing up with students and assisting in small movement or acting scenes, setting up AV equipment, and modeling scenes with the instructor (depending on the level of comfort and experience of the volunteer). There are typically deaf students in the class, so in addition to the assigned interpreters any volunteers fluent in ASL are welcome as well. Volunteers are welcome to assist with one or both classes and are welcome to visit initially to see if it's a good match. Feel free to contact the instructor with questions.

This is a fun, participatory and potentially life changing experience for both the volunteers and the participants in the class. These classes are free to the public and non-credit and open to anyone, with or without disabilities.

About Pomeroy Recreation & Rehabilitation Center

Location:

Mission Statement

The mission of the Pomeroy Recreation & Rehabilitation Center is to provide recreational, vocational and educational opportunities for people with disabilities through programs and services that encourage self-expression, promote personal achievement, and lead to greater independence.

Description

Founded in 1952, the Center provides programs for nearly 400 children, teens, adults and seniors with developmental disabilities and for survivors of traumatic or acquired brain injury. Center facilities include a therapeutic swimming pool, gymnasium, adaptive computer lab, playground, theater with stage, and a community garden with greenhouse. For decades the Center has offered classes in the arts, computer literacy, health and wellness, socialization, and outings into the community.

Central to the legacy established by founder Janet Pomeroy is a commitment to inclusion and integration into the non-disabled community at large. To that end, the Herbst Pool's public swim classes and therapeutic swim hours allow for easy mixing of our clients with the public. Our community performance series brings artists to our main hall stage for public events, and our clients serve as hosts, welcoming attendees and working concessions. Clients participate in group volunteer opportunities in the community several days a week, providing home delivery of groceries through Meals on Wheels and the SF Marin Food Bank and supporting activities at St. Anthony’s. And on an individual basis, the Center provides employment training, job placement, and coaching, enabling interested clients to find their place as contributing members of the community.

We accept volunteers ages high school and up.
